Alexander Creswell

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan marks the middle of The Silk Road, the great overland trading route from the Orient to Europe.  I had yearned to embark on this cultural highway, and the opportunity arose to begin halfway along its length with an invitation to visit Uzbekistan.  I was dazzled by the light, the architecture, craftsmanship and landscape.  All of these were unfamiliar to my European eye, and together they combined to inspire a feast of sketches and – later – a set of finished works which had been commissioned to adorn a private collection.
